Abstract

The current effort, experimentally demonstrate, outcome of SiO2 nanoparticles reinforcement on tensile property of epoxy SiO2 particulate composites. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show random distribution of nano filler in matrix. At some places agglomerations were also witnessed in the TEM images. The epoxy composites was fabricated by instant polymerization, blended with 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% weight fraction (wt.%) of SiO2. Dog-bone samples of composite were experimentally evaluated for tensile behaviour following ASTM D-638. Significant enhancement in the tensile behaviour is records for SiO2 filled epoxy composite specially at 1.0% wt.% content of SiO2. Maximum improvement are 16%, 31% and 67% over the unblended epoxy was recorded for Young’s modulus, strength and failure strain respectively at 1.0% wt.% of SiO2 in epoxy composites. The increased crack deflection, particle pull out and void deformation were the probable micro mechanisms responsible for increased tensile behaviour of composites.
