Effect of Impingent Angle on Erosion Behaviour of Epoxy Alumina Composite
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines how impingement angle influences the erosion performance of epoxy–alumina nanocomposites prepared through a two-step instant crosslinking technique. Epoxy LY 556 served as the matrix material, while alumina nanoparticles smaller than 50 nm were incorporated as reinforcement. Three filler content, namely 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt.%, were considered during fabrication. Erosion specimens of the required dimensions were manually cut from the composite sheets using a hacksaw. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed a uniform distribution of alumina nano particulates throughout epoxy matrix. Erosion experiments were conducted at room temperature on a Du-com air jet erosion tester following the procedure of ASTM G-76 standards. The impingement angle was varied at 30°, 60°, and 90° to evaluate erosion characteristics under different conditions. Results showed that erosion resistance improved progressively with increasing filler loading. The peak erosion loss occurred at the 60° impact angle, whereas the maximum reduction in erosion rate, approximately 44%, was observed for the composite containing 1.5 wt.% alumina. SEM analysis of eroded surfaces revealed deep craters, micro cracks, shallow pits, patterns after particle impact. These findings highlight the significant role of nanoparticle reinforcement in improving composite durability substantially.
