Systematic Evaluation of Abrasive Wear Resistance in Smart Cermet Marine Coatings for High-Speed Pump Impellers
Main Article Content
Abstract
High-speed marine pump impellers experience severe wear under abrasive seawater conditions, while conventional
coatings offer limited durability. This research investigates smart and sustainable cermet marine coatings, developed using a single ceramic phase combined with three metallic binders, to identify an optimum composition with enhanced abrasive wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and durability. The coatings were placed on marine-grade stainless steel (AISI 316L) using a high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray process and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Abrasive wear performance was evaluated through slurry erosion, microhardness, surface roughness, adhesion strength, and electrochemical corrosion testing. Among the three compositions, coating c2 achieved optimum performance, with the highest microhardness (1210 HV), lowest wear rate (10.1 mg/h), and superior adhesion and corrosion resistance. SEM and XRD confirmed a denser, well-bonded microstructure with minimal porosity. The findings demonstrate significantly enhanced wear resistance, corrosion protection, and durability for marine applications.
