Abstract
In this work, a hybrid metal matrix composite Al2024/SiC/Al2O3/Sn was fabricated using the stir casting method. The
wt.% of reinforcement materials viz., Al2O3 and SiC was varied between 0 to 7.5 wt.%., However Sn was held constant at 2 wt.%. Tensile strength, hardness and impact strength of the developed composite were analyzed. Results depicted that tensile strength and hardness was increased by about 56 percent and 67 percent, respectively. The percentage elongation, and impact strength were found to be reduced as the reinforcement content increased. The lowest impact strength was reported in the composite with 7.5 wt.% Al2O3, 1.5 wt.% SiC and 2 wt.% Sn that had the highest tensile strength and hardness values. In addition, the EDS elemental mapping analysis showed the presence of the main elements Al, O, Si, C, Sn, Cu, Mg, and Mn, which means that the reinforcement particles in the aluminium matrix were successfully incorporated.
